Steel garlic press beside cloves and crushed garlic

One Squeeze, Skin On

Chopping garlic finely takes time and leaves your hands smelling of it all day. One squeeze turns a clove into a fine mince, skin on, with no knife work at all.

Close view of the solid cast arms of the garlic press

Solid Steel, No Flex

Cast from solid stainless steel rather than moulded plastic, which matters the moment you meet a stubborn clove. Nothing bends and nothing cracks under pressure.

Garlic press beside fresh ginger and shallots

Ginger And Shallots Too

The same chamber takes ginger and shallots, and the skin lifts straight out afterwards. The Essential Kitchen likes a tool that quietly does more than its name suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to peel the garlic first?

No. Drop the clove in skin and all. The garlic comes through the holes and the skin stays behind in the chamber, ready to lift straight out.

How many cloves at once?

The chamber is deep enough for two, which means a recipe calling for four cloves takes two squeezes rather than four.

Does it give chunks or a proper mince?

A proper mince. The hole pattern is fine enough to produce something close to paste, so the garlic disperses through a sauce instead of sitting in lumps.

Can I use it for anything else?

Ginger and shallots both work well, which saves getting a grater out for a single thumb of ginger.

Is it easy to clean?

Rinse it under a tap or put it in the dishwasher. Stainless steel will not stain, rust or hold onto the smell the way plastic presses do.
